The Barrier Islands protect the mainland from hurricanes and major storms. The Barrier Islands are known not only for the protection they give, but also because they are so beautiful. That is why it has a lot of tourism. In the early times of Georgia, settlers used the Barrier Island to build forts to protect themselves from enemies, such as Spain and pirates.
