Spanish in Georgia
The first expedition was carried out in 1525. This was called the Allyon expedition. Allyon established a colony called San Miguel De Gualdape. But it did not last long as they had hoped. It was abandoned 6 weeks after it was established. Next came the De Soto Expedition. In 1540 with 600 men Hernando De Soto set out for Georgia. This expedition went past the Flint River, visiting the Chiefdom of Capachequi along the way. They continued to South Carolina, North Carolina, turned north to cross the Appalachian Mountains, and then finally landed back in Georgia in July. The result of this expedition was enormous, but not exactly in the good way. Many Indians died because of the diseases that they got from European contact. A little while after the De Soto expedition, came the De Luna Colony. Dominican Priests launched a massive colonial venture under the control of Tristen De Luna. In April 1560, Luna sent 140 soldiers to backtrack De Soto's expedition. But the Luna Colony failed and most of the Mexicans returned to their home. But there is still one last Spanish expedition that took place. It took place 1645 to 1646. Florida governor, Benito Ruiz De Salazar Vallecilla led some soldiers to an Appalachian province that was located near the Chattahoochee River in southeast Georgia. This expedition was the last Spanish venture in Georgia.
