40a - describe the impact of events leading up to American involvement in World War II to include the Lend-lease Act and the bombing of Pearl Harbor
Lend Lease Act
In the beginning, Congress had passed neutrality acts to keep U.S. out of another war. But Roosevelt felt like he had to do something to help the war. So instead of directly entering the war, Roosevelt asked for and got a new law passed that allowed the Allied Powers to buy weapons, but only if they themselves took them to and back. U.S. would take no part in helping Britain carrying the weapons to and from the U.S. Unfortunately, in 1941, Britain ran out of cash to pay for the weapons. On March 11, 1941, Roosevelt convinced congress to be able to lend or lease arms to Britain. Just to make sure that the supplies actually got to them, he built air bases in Greenland and Iceland. Unlike last time, the U.S. Navy was ordered to escort British ships part of the way across the Atlantic. Britain wasn't the only one to receive aid from the lend lease act. Other countries such as the Soviet Union, China, Brazil, and other countries also received weapons from America.

Bombing Of Pearl Harbor
It all started when U.S. cut off all exports with Japan, especially oil. This was supposed to protest Japanese expansion, but instead it just made things worse. Because Japan now badly needed oil, it decided to attack The Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and the only thing standing in there way was Pear Harbor, Hawaii. On December 7, at 8:00, the air was filled with the sounds of machine gun fire and low level bombing. The Japanese attack finally ended two hours later at 10:00 but the damage to the Navy's Pacific fleet was horrible. All eight of the battleships in the port were destroyed plus 12 other Navy vessels. The ships weren't the only things destroyed, however. Over 2,000 Americans and sailors were killed and another 1,000 were wounded. This day became known as the "day that will live in infamy" (Said by president Roosevelt). This incident finally led the U.S. to have to make a decision. They could no longer stay out of the war after this inhumane attack. The U.S. declared war on Japan the next day on, December 8, 1941. A few days later, being allies with Japan, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. The U.S was finally thrown into the midst of the war and it had officially begun.
