33a - defend the importance of James Oglethorpe, Charter of 1732, reasons for settlement (charity, economics, and defense), Tomo chichi, Mary Musgrove, and the city of Savannah
The City of Savannah
When Oglethorpe settled in Georgia, he became friends with the Yamacraw Chief, Tomochichi, he let Oglethorpe settle on the bluff near the Savannah River. This city came to be known as Savannah. On February 12th Oglethorpe began the process of laying out the plots for Savannah. The inspiration to make the city was Oglethorpe's dear friend, Robert Castell. He wanted to make a city like this before he died, and Oglethorpe wanted to make his dream come true. Robert's idea was for the city to be divided into 4 squares. Each square would be a kind of Neighbor center. Facing each square would be a place for public buildings. Each square would hold 40 house lots, each 60 to 90 feet, organized into 4 groups of 10. Just as Savannah was about to be finished, a crises occurred. Many people were starting to get sick after drinking the water at a nearby freshwater river, and the worst part was the colony's only doctor died. During those horrid 10 months a lot of settlers died. Thankfully the solution was easy. They dug a town well, and soon life was back to normal. New arrivals came as soon as Savannah recovered. Among them were 40 Jews, and in their numbers was a doctor, Samual Nunis, helped the Georgia colony a great deal. During this time, Oglethorpe was loved by everyone in the colony, and was always called Father.
