Spanish missions along the Barrier Islands
In 1565, the Spanish wanted to build a permanent settlement in North America. So a captain called General Pedro Menendez to o and establish a colony. He established a colony in St. Augustine, Florida. In 1566 they moved into the barrier islands. The two they settled in were Cumberland Island and St. Catherine Island. On St Catherine Island the Spanish built a mission or a church where the main purpose is to change the Native American religion culture into Spanish called Santa Catalina. Though many men came to the Island only 30 stayed to protect the land and convincing the Native Americans to become Catholic. The Spanish also settled on St. Simons Island and built forts and missions on that too. However there was one Problem. The Native Americans themselves. They did NOT want to change their religion and culture. So there were tensions and conflicts between the two. There were often may riots and revolts. Some of the Indian population moved further away, because the Spanish were slowly killing them with their diseases. Things got even worse when the British arrived and started settling on places north of the Spanish missions. One of the Places the British settled was present-day Charleston around 1670. They encouraged the Native Americans to disagree with the Spanish and to fight for there land. And let's not forget the pirates. The British also convinced many pirates to raid Spanish settlements. As a result many of the Spanish left the settlement. By 1685, all the Spanish settlements were abandoned. The British had won..for now.....
