The Ku Klux or KKK for short, was formed in Tennessee in 1866. The name cam from the Greek word, "Kuklos" meaning circle. The KKK is a very loosely formed organization. A former Confederate general Nathen Bedford Forrest served as the overall leader of the KKK. Many whites, were angry with political failures in 1867. For many people the Ku Klux Clan, was a chance for action. In 1868, General Forrest met up with other Georgian Conservatives. During his visit he organized a statewide Ku Klux structure. By 1868 Klan was known all over Georgia. Their terrorism started on March, 1868, when George Ashburn was murdered in Columbus, Georgia. During 1868 their actions became violent. They whipped black women because they were insolent. It was clear that in 1868 attacks on blacks became common. The freedmen Bureau reported 336 cases of murder and assault. The Klansmen intimidated voters and federal soldiers. So 1,122 votes were cast for governor Rufus Bullock ( on KKK's side), only one person dared to make a vote for Ulysses Grant. Only after Democratic triumph in the state elections, and aggressive intervention in 1871 and 1872, did the Ku Klux Klan start to fade away. In the 1980's a new Ku Klux Clan was made. They were the good ones. They founded Atlanta in 1915.
