33a - defend the importance of James Oglethorpe, Charter of 1732, reasons for settlement (charity, economics, and defense), Tomo chichi, Mary Musgrove, and the city of Savannah
Georgia Carter of 1732 On June 7th, 1732 King George II to Oglethorpe and 20 other trustees. A charter is a legal document granting rights and privileges. This Charter was what they used to start the Georgia colony. The Georgia colony was made to help debtors that could not pay back their debts. However, four groups were not allowed to enter the colony: Drug dealers; because alcohol was not allowed, Africans; so the trustees could keep slavery out of Georgia, Catholics; because Great Britain was a protestant colony, and lawyers; Oglethorpe wanted them to solve problems themselves. People that wanted to move to Georgia were carefully investigated. The people that got in would get 500 acres of land and enough food for an entire year. But their were some regulations: 1) The men had to defend the colony, 2) Land given to the settlers could not be sold for profit, 3) colonists must obey all rules and trustees, 4) The settlers had to use the tools given to them to cultivate their land, and 5) The settlers ha to grow Mulberry trees so that the silkworms would eat the leaves and then their cocoons would be used to make silk. |
