The Coastal Plain
The fall lines marks the beginning of the coastal plain. Beneath the coastal plain are hard igneous and metamorphic rocks. Coastal plain sediments occur as layers. Some of the earliest dinosaurs have been found in these valleys. Many valuable things have been found in the Coastal Plain, such as: Triassic Rock cores, lower Cretaceous strata, late Cretaceous Oyster. It is the largest region in the U.S., but is not the most populated. It makes up 60% of Georgia. In prehistoric time the coastal plain was completely covered by ocean. After thousands of years, billions of seashells, and other things sank to the sea floor. Becoming tightly packed, they eventually became home for a soft rock called limestone. After some time, the ocean retreated, leaving only limestone, clay. and sand, where it had once been. The coastal plain today is mostly flat with some gentle slopes. For about 75 miles inland, the soil is not fertile. Swampy areas are common in the coastal region. When early settlers came to the plains, they saw that nothing except pine trees and bushes would grow. So they called this place pine barrens. This land is used for timber, pulp, turpentine, and other products.
