Dear President Roosevelt,
I have barely any words to express my gratitude for you putting the Rural Electrification Authority act into place. It has helped my family move through the worst of this horrid depression. Now we can do work easier and enjoy some of the same luxuries as the people living in the cities. Before, we couldn’t even afford electricity because the company’s price was so high. But now that you have mad this act, we can finally enjoy electricity in our homes too. Because of the act, we have to pay much less then we could possibly afford before. Now we can pay, and still have a little extra for something else.
This decision that you have made has impacted us farmers greatly. With electricity we can get work done faster and by this you haven’t jus helped us but the people around us such as the local merchants, because they get profit from selling the electricity appliances to us, and in turn the government also receives profit. This act has saved labor, increased production, and improved our quality of life the way we know it. I did a little bit of asking around and since my uncle joined an electricity cooperative company I also figured out that before the act was passed, only 10 percent of us farmers had electricity. Thanks to you, it is now up to 25 percent.
The access to electricity greatly changed our rural way of life. It brought appliances into the house and fields, improving health and sanitation with running water, and it also helped us connect with the outer world with the new technology – the radio. I know you and the government have spent a great deal of money to allow us to have this wonderful luxury and I thank you with all my heart. From now on, you will be known as a savior to us farmers. This would never have happened without your devotion and determination to help us in any way u could. If there is any way that we could come in any use for you, please don’t hesitate to ask because after what you have done for us, it would take us years to pay you back.
Thank you and with all my gratitude,
Cindy Jones
