The Paleo Indians
Paleo Indians have been grouped into 3 sub periods: Early, Middle, and Late. The Early Paleo Indians were characterized by Clovis and related projectile point forms, etc. The Middle Paleo Indians are characterized by smaller fluted points, unfluted lanceolate points, etc. The late Paleo Indians are characterized by lanceolate blade outlining and concave base ground. Paleo Indians moved over large areas, on foot or by boat. They had about 25 to 50 people in their group. They were known as hunters and gatherers. They hunted animals, but no specific animals are known. There have not been any large Paleo sites. The reason they have not found many sites is because the Paleo Indians moved around a lot. They moved from place to place because they wanted to follow the animals when they left for better grazing. This could be the reason why Paleo Indians came to be in Georgia. The first site was identified in the mid-1930's. The first thing that was found was a Clovis Point, along with many other tools. The artifacts were heavily weathered, which meant they were from an early Paleo site in Georgia. These sites are rare, so when found, should be protected.
